Called "the birthplace of American ranching," the storied King Ranch grew alongside Texas from its earliest days. This authorized memoir by the Klebergs' only daughter is richly and lavishly illustrated with over 200 never-before-published intimate and beautiful archival photographs of Bob and Helen Kleberg, their fascinating family, and their interesting visitors and friends from across the country and around the world.
Bob Kleberg developed the first American cattle breed, the Santa Gertrudis; made advances in grass and forage research; and pioneered in water conservation and in cattle disease prevention and control.
Together, Bob and Helen Kleberg led in Texas Thoroughbred breeding, notably as owners of Triple Crown Winner Assault. Helen Kleberg, as a very talented photographer, worked closely with her friend and colleague, Toni Frissell, preeminent fashion photographer of the 1930s and '40s noted for being the first to move out of the studio to photograph clothing in glamorous locations.
Included is lore of Texas-brush-country hunting in the style of Hemingway.
Approximately 50 wonderful photographs from the book were the subject of a extraordinary exhibition at the Houston Museum of Fine Art in 2005.
